Friday Forum (59)

Hi all, and welcome to the latest news bulletin from One Short Story To Be Told. This has, I have to say, been a very quiet week. So I won’t be keeping you long today.

All, bar one, of the six volumes I have floating and flying around the globe have remained static (so far as I know) since last Friday. In fact I could say they have all been static. But that would, I feel, be unkind to Volume Six (Home), who has been trying to make a move this week. So far, however, Paul Depuis (who is releasing ‘Home’) and Adrian Hickey (who is keenly awaiting ‘Home”s arrival) have failed to connect. Perhaps the weekend will see them attain the success they crave.

Certainly the tenacity with which Adrian approached Paul’s movie role competition would indicate he will not be deterred. Actually I’ve been meaning to share Adrian’s entry with you for a while (it is very entertaining). So perhaps I’ll do that now. In fact I will. Here we go.

Hi Paul, my favourite character would be Jules Winnfield (played by Samuel L Jackson) in Pulp Fiction. I thought his bible speech was so fucking cool, his afro uber brilliant, and he had the best lines in the movie. He was also a righteous mother fucking super cool bad ass! So, let’s not have Volume Six eating purple snacks, share the love;

Jules: There’s a passage I got memorized. Ezekiel 25:17. “The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy My brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay My vengeance upon you.” Now… I been sayin’ that shit for years. And if you ever heard it, that meant your ass. You’d be dead right now. I never gave much thought to what it meant. I just thought it was a cold-blooded thing to say to a motherfucker before I popped a cap in his ass. But I saw some shit this mornin’ made me think twice. See, now I’m thinking: maybe it means you’re the evil man. And I’m the righteous man. And Mr. 9mm here… he’s the shepherd protecting my righteous ass in the valley of darkness. Or it could mean you’re the righteous man and I’m the shepherd and it’s the world that’s evil and selfish. And I’d like that. But that shit ain’t the truth. The truth is you’re the weak. And I’m the tyranny of evil men. But I’m tryin’, Ringo. I’m tryin’ real hard to be the shepherd. Yours, Adrian Hickey AKA Racey Hadikin.

Pretty cool huh? I can’t wait for Adrain to post the video of him playing the part on YOUTUBE!

Now before I go I should tell you that there is one other possibility of activity this week (my bracketed ‘So far as I know’ earlier hinted at this). It is possible that Volume Four (Sleepyhead) began it’s journey from Cork to Perth. But, if it has, I am unaware of it as Sinead O’ Meara, who has promised Volume Four to Dave Allen, nor Dave Allen (the promisee) have not been in touch to conform departure or arrival. Not that I’m worried. Not at all. Sinead is as trustworthy as any human on the planet. And Dave? Well Dave is so excited at the prospect of Sleepyhead staying with him there is no way it’s arrival would go unannounced.

And that is that for this week folks. There may be news on the other four One Short Story To Be Told volumes (Numbers 1, 2, 3 and 5 for those of you who are interested) next week. Then again there may not.

What It’s All About

Imagine you are a story. You'd want to be heard, wouldn't you? You wouldn't want to be lying idle on a PC drive, or to sit collecting dust on a shelf or in an attic. You'd want to live, forever.

But in this modern world stories find it increasingly difficult to be told. The age old practice of gathering around fires to relate tales of yore and now has all but disappeared. Magazines are increasingly fussy. Writers increasingly frustrated. They write the stories, try to find them a home, but are rejected time and time again. So the stories lie idle, their tiny hearts still beating, but drowned out in the chaos of the modern world.

But they still want to be heard. They still want to find someone that loves them, and then someone else, and someone else and...

One Short Story To Be Told gives stories a chance to be heard. See, I believe that editors and publishers aren't always right. I believe people want to hear as many stories as possible. I believe people want not just to read a story, but to share it too.

In essence I believe that humans are on the stories' side.

So One Short Story To Be Told strives to make stories feel special by allowing them to be treated to the very best type of attention available to man, beast or story on a regular basis. That, of course, is ONE TO ONE attention.

Each volume of One Short Story To Be Told contains just ONE STORY - and there is ONLY ONE COPY OF EACH VOLUME. Yes, that's right: we are not selling books. Rather, we are asking that people realise, or remember, that stories are special, and to assist us in helping our stories to live forever. This, you will be aware, is the lofty ambition every story ever written holds close to its heart.

Our stories can only achieve this goal, however, with the assistance of story lovers. They need story lovers to read them (obviously). But more importantly they need story lovers to GIVE: or to put it another way 'to pass the story on'. Only then can we achieve the third part of
our mission statement (if it is indeed that) ONE STORY. ONE EDITION. ONE JOURNEY.

The journey, you see, is key. And so I ask you at this point to imagine how wonderful a journey that is made up of ONE to ONE attention would be? How special you would feel if you were to spend the rest of your life in the company of people who gave you their undivided attention while you were with them?
Feels good, doesn't it?

Well that's what is being creating for the One Short Story To Be Told stories.

But the future of One Short Story To Be Told is dependent on homes being available to them. It is dependent on people who are willing to provide a One Short Story To Be Told volume with a loving and caring (but temporary) home. Could you be one of those people? Would you provide one of those homes? I fervently hope so.
